Meet Cassy!
Cassy is a 2nd year student doing a major in Human Biology and a double minor in Immunology and Physiology. She is hardworking, compassionate and she really loves making people laugh. When she’s in familiar environments where she feels most comfortable, she is an extremely outgoing person. Cassy makes music, with a focus on Afrobeats, RnB, and Haitian zouk.
Moving On From…
Coming to university, she wasn’t expecting to go from orientation week straight into classes, and she found that extra transition to be difficult. The fast-paced environment in her classes was hard for her to keep up with, and upon the realization that there were different academic strength levels in her classes, she had feelings of imposter syndrome as if she didn’t deserve to be at the University of Toronto.
Currently, Cassy has been questioning whether life science is truly for her, and she misses taking humanities courses as she did in high school. This has caused her mental health to suffer, and compared to her first year, second year has been much harder for her, with longer periods of self-doubt especially thinking about her grades and how it may impact her chances of making it into medical school. So in order to build up her self-esteem, she has taken up journaling and watches motivational videos in order to figure out what her purpose in life is. Most importantly, she’s trying to figure out what’s best for her as opposed to listening to what others believe she should do.
Cassy’s Take Home Message
“Don’t worry about the little things, rather focus on what you can do. The year may be hard but keep striving and planning because eventually everything will work out for you. And really learn to be more open about your emotions as they are as valid as the next person”- to her 1st year self
“Don’t let academics affect your mental health– at the end of the day your well-being is way more important than the grades you get. After all, you can’t take a test if your health is failing. Actively practice self-care as it is the key to happiness! Try to just focus on yourself and not what others are doing, because at the end of the day you don’t know what is truly going on behind the scenes”- to the people reading this
