SUMMARY:English Student Union Elections for 2014-2015 Executive & General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Are you an English student? Do you want to have a more active role in planning social and academic events for other students studying English? Would you like to be more involved on campus in general? Then come and join the English Students’ Union Executive team! \nThis year we brought you English student swag\, had an amazing turnout at our academic seminars and a super fun pub night (where lots of crazy stories were told!)\, and we’ve got a poetry night coming up as well. There are lots of great ideas and events we can plan for next year for everyone on campus\, so why not be a part of it? \nAny student enrolled in an English program (specialist\, major or minor) is eligible to run for a position on the ESU. We ask that you fill out a nomination form with 10 signatures from students taking at least 0.5 FCE of ENG courses (for the Presidential position – 15 signatures of the same criteria). Please bring your completed nomination form to elections\, which will take place on Thursday\, April 3rd\, 2014 at 4:30 PM. Candidates will be asked to make a 2-3 minute speech detailing why they are suitable for the position (e.g. former experience on ESU\, other campus activities/course unions\, skills). \nDuring this election candidates are welcome to run for the following positions: \nPresident (2)\nVice-President (2)\nEvent Planner (2)\nCommunications Officers (2)\nMentorship Program Coordinator (2)\nESU-IDIOM Liaison (1)\nTreasurer (1) \nIf you are not running for a position\, please come out to be an active part of the voting community! DESCRIPTION:ENSU Elections for 2014-2015 are coming up! \nPositions that you can run for: \n-Co-Presidents (2) \n-Treasurer (1) \n-Secretary (1) \n-Social Media & Communications Coordinator (1) \n-Upper Year Representatives (2) \n-Webmaster (1) \n(*The position of lower year representatives shall be filled in the following academic year.) \n  \nIndividuals may nominate themselves for a position on the ENSU executive until the day specified by the Chief Returning Officer (CRO). Only full time (or ASSU fee paying) students enrolled in a specialist\, major\, or minor in the School of the Environment or enrolled in 1 ENV course and intending to enrol in a School of the Environment program may run for the positions. \n  \nThe deadline to submit your intention to run is Tuesday April 1st at midnight. Candidates must submit their intention to run and a blurb to: ensu.utoronto@gmail.com \n  \nVoting will be conducted via online voting. The link for online voting will be posted on the Facebook page on the day of by 9am. \n  \nCandidates are highly discouraged from putting up posters in effort of maintaining the environmentally friendly interests of the club. DESCRIPTION:Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations Students’ Union will be hosting its annual year-end social on March 28th\, 2014 from 12-4 PM in the conference room on the second floor of Bancroft building. \nIn addition to being happy about the end of school\, we will also be showing off the newly-published edition of 2013-2014 Undergraduate Journal of Middle East. The journal features essays written by your fellow students\, and a limited number of copies will be made available for free. \nWe will be celebrating the end of school year by holding elections for the NMCSU exec team for the 2014-2015 school year. Kennedy\nFriday\, March 21\, 2014 | 12-2 PM | BA024 (Bahen Centre for Information & Technology) | LIGHT LUNCH SERVED\nOn July 27\, 2002\, American forces shot and captured Omar Khadr after a firefight in Ayub-Kheyl\, Afghanistan. Khadr was incarcerated and subsequently charged by a military tribunal for killing an American solider using a grenade. Despite being a Canadian citizen and only fifteen years of age\, the Canadian government made no significant claim to have Khadr extradited to Canada\, prompting outrage for alleged civil rights abuses.\nJoin the Association of Political Science Students for its third and final lunch and learn event of the year as we welcome Professor Gerard J. Kennedy to discuss the legal dimensions of this case. \nSPEAKER- Gerard J. Kennedy\nGerard Kennedy is a litigator at Osler\, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP\, and a lecturer at the University of Toronto for the course on international law (POL 340).\nKennedy’s practice encompasses class action defence\, administrative and regulatory matters and corporate­commercial litigation. Kennedy joined the firm in 2012 after completing his LL.M. at Harvard Law School. At Harvard\, Gerard served as a research assistant to Dean Martha Minow and Professor Philip Heymann. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2011 after clerking at the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto. In 2009\, he interned at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.\nKennedy earned his J.D. from Queen’s University. At Queen’s\, he was a research assistant for ten faculty\, in addition to serving as Senior Associate Editor of the Queen’s Law Journal and Vice­President (Academic) of the Queen’s Law Students’ Society. He participated in the Gale\, Jessup and Fasken moots.

SUMMARY:Hiding in Plain Sight: Spatial Practices of Penal Isolation in the Era of Mass Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:In the U.S. today\, more people are sentenced to more time in more prisons and in greater isolation than at any other time in its history. This project investigates how isolation operates within the organization and reproduction of the contemporary American prison system: how it is produced\, what effects it has\, and the primary arenas or means by which it is contested or undermined. Specifically\, penal isolation and its contradictions at four main sites located in the contemporary landscape of the New York State penal system: in the immediate\, architectural space of solitary confinement within the prison itself; in the increasingly remote siting of prisons far from prisoner families and communities; from the densely penalized space of the urban “million-dollar block”; and in the spaces of circulation between and within urban and prison space which emerge or persist as social rebuttals to the organization of penal isolation. \nBrett Story is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Geography and Program in Planning. Her research focuses on the U.S. prison system\, and the shifting relationship between urban and penal space. Brett has also worked extensively as an independent documentary filmmaker and freelance journalist\, writing and producing video for publications such as The Nation\, The Montreal Mirror\, and the Toronto Review of Books. \nThe seminar will run from 4-6pm and will be followed by a screening of “Prisonville\, USA” from 6-8pm.\nRefreshments will be provided so please join us!

SUMMARY:Health Studies Symposium 2013: Clinical Perspectives on the "Age of Austerity"
DESCRIPTION:An alarm has been set off in our era and it rings to the beat of austerity. Popularized by the British Conservative Party Leader David Cameron in 2009\, the “Age of Austerity” stakes its claims in the current inability to provide the services and cares demanded for adequate health. What exactly then\, does this state of scarcity mean for the state of health and health care in North America? \nOn March 27th and March 28th\, the Health Studies Students’ Union is proud to present the HSSU Annual Health Symposium featuring presentations from students who have been conducting independent research and an opportunity to engage in public discussions regarding their projects of interest. \nIn engaging the University of Toronto Community with real-world\, health related issues\, the HSSU presents a panelist discussion with three experts from different fields to discuss the clinical impacts of health and health care as we live in what is considered the Age of “Austerity”.
