DESCRIPTION:  \nTickets for this event are now sold out.  A waitlist is available.  There will also be a rush line on the day of the event. \nOn Wednesday Feb 24th join us at the Isabel Bader Theatre\, as best selling author\, broadcast journalist\, administrator and indigenous advocate\, Wab Kinew addresses reconciliation and the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation commission.  You can reserve tickets for this event beginning Wednesday Jan 13th at 10:00 AM. \nThere will be a rush line before the talk begins\, however there is no guarantee that seats will be available. \n— \nWab Kinew (pron: WOB ka-NOO) is a one-of-a-kind talent\, named by Postmedia News as one of “9 Aboriginal movers and shakers you should know.” He is the Associate Vice-President for Indigenous Relations at The University of Winnipeg and a correspondent with Aljazeera America. Wab inspires the young and the young at heart through hands on learning\, artistic performance and motivational speaking. \nIn 2012\, Wab hosted the acclaimed CBC Television series 8th Fire. His hip-hop has won an Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award. His journalism has won an Adrienne Clarkson RTNDA Award and been nominated for a Gemini Award. He has a BA in Economics and is a member of the Midewin. 2012 also saw Wab named the University of Winnipeg’s first ever director of indigenous inclusion. \nIn 2014\, Wab successfully defended Joseph Boyden’s “The Orenda” on CBC’s Canada Reads literary competition. Soon after\, CBC announced Wab as the show’s host\, the fourth in its annual battle of the books. \n“Honest Injun”… “Indian giver”… “Cowboys and Indians”… These are just expressions that have creeped into our language. They don’t really mean anything… right? Wrong. Wab knows all about words. He took on his own bosses in a fight over words. Are the children of residential schools simply former students? Or are they\, as Wab insisted\, survivors? For Wab that fight was close to home. His father grew up in a residential school like more than a hundred thousand other Native children. He was brutalized and terrorized. And lived to tell about it. \nFor Wab\, his father wasn’t merely a former student. The residential school mission of “killing the Indian in the child” quite often simply killed the child. For those who managed to stay alive\, Wab wanted Canadians to know that the story of Aboriginal people today isn’t limited to the words – and pictures – we are used to. Images of communities in crisis – of broken down homes\, mouldy trailer\, and grinding poverty – taken in Aboriginal and Inuit communities like Attawapiskat\, Kashechewan\, and Davis Inlet. \nThese pictures tell Native and non-Native Canadians the only relationship these two groups can have is one based on charity – helper and helped. 8th Fire is trying to change that. Its premise? Native and non-Native Canadians can have relationships based on mutual trust and benefit. Wab stands at the divide of these two solitudes\, holding out his hand. He calls himself an ambassador for First Nations people. And he says it’s about time Canadians – all of us – figure this relationship out. \nWab inspires the young and the young at heart through hands on learning\, artistic performance and motivational speaking. Drawing on the wisdom of the Anishinaabe elders\, western education and experience as a journalist\, Wab can work with people to discover their inner passions and help transform those passions into purposeful action. \nYoung Canadians\, and Aboriginal youth in particular\, face a wealth of challenges from rising obesity rates to lack of engagement with the political system all the way to a sense of loneliness amidst an increasingly technological world. In spite of the diversity of challenges\, he believes that there is a common solution to all of these obstacles: building a new generation of active\, motivated and compassionate citizens. DESCRIPTION:Over the last several weeks\, the Faculty of Arts & Science has been engaging with staff and faculty to solicit feedback on the University of Toronto’s current phase of their Academic Toolbox Renewal Initiative (ATRI).  The goal of the ATRI is to develop a standards based technology ecosystem for the University of Toronto\, including a core Learning Management Engine (LME) plus a Toolbox of other tools and resources. \nWe would like to give FAS students an opportunity to share your views on the portal (also known as Blackboard) and the various associated tools and to hear from you about what you would like to see in a new system. \nWe are pleased to invite you to a Town Hall discussion on Thursday\, January 28th from 3PM-4PM in SS 2102.  Please consider how you might you use a LME to better support your learning and to manage your courses.  Some of the other faculties at the university have already provided feedback\, which is documented on the ATRI LME Page. \nWe look forward to meeting with you\, and hearing your feedback on this exciting initiative. \n

Moderated by Citizen Lab Director\, Professor Ronald Deibert. \nNo registration required\, film will begin at 6:30 pm sharp. \nRon Deibert\, (OOnt\, PhD\, University of British Columbia) is Professor of Political Science\, and Director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs\, University of Toronto. The Citizen Lab is an interdisciplinary research and development hothouse working at the intersection of the Internet\, global security\, and human rights. \nBen Wizner (@benwizner) is the Director of the ACLU’s Speech\, Privacy & Technology Project. For nearly fifteen years\, he has worked at the intersection of civil liberties and national security\, litigating numerous cases involving airport security policies\, government watch lists\, surveillance practices\, targeted killing\, and torture. He appears regularly in the global media\, has testified before Congress\, and is an adjunct professor at New York University School of Law. Since July of 2013\, he has been the principal legal advisor to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Ben is a graduate of Harvard College and New York University School of Law and was a law clerk to the Hon. Stephen Reinhardt of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Part of eXpression Against Oppression and the City Series.\n\nThe Black community within Toronto continues to experience extreme marginalization\, systemetic disadvantage\, restricted access to housing\, racial profiling in policing/security/education\, criminalization\, over-representation in the criminal justice system\, and high levels of unemployment. These injustices are continuously neglected by the general public\, and are thus unaccounted for. \nOn Tuesday\, November 17th\, 2015 from 7-9 PM join Desmond Cole in an unfiltered discussion on the ways in which anti-Black racism manifests in Toronto and the affirmative actions that need to be taken by Torontonians\, the police force\, and the government in order to remedy these injustices. In addition\, a portion of this event will be dedicated to proper anti-Black racism allyship\, and what it means to be an ally to the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Non-Black allies are also encouraged to contribute to the space by way of active listening and internalized reflection.

Interested candidates should be prepared to deliver a quick 1-2 minute speech on why they would be best suited for their position and any ideas they may have for next year’s APSS team. DESCRIPTION:We are happy to announce that LMPSU will be holding its General Elections to elect its Executive Team for the 2014-2015 academic year. Executives act as liaisons between students and the LMP department\, in addition to coordinating various social and academic events for LMP students. Full info: \n1. Voting will take place in two stages this year: Presidential Elections on March 28-30 and Executive Elections on March 30-April 2. The Presidential Elections are solely for the Co-President positions\, while the Executive Elections are for the remaining Executive positions. If a candidate for Co-President is not elected\, s/he may opt to run in the Executive Elections. \nALL students who are currently enrolled or have been enrolled in LMP courses in the 2013-2014 academic year are eligible to vote! \n2. You’ll be able to cast your vote at voting.utoronto.ca. We will also be holding a forum on Thursday\, March 27\, 6-8 pm in MSB 3163 for all candidates to attend and for voters to address all candidates. This is your chance to get to know your potential LMPSU executives! \n3. If you’re interested in running for any of the eligible executive positions\, please refer to the Candidate Instruction sheet pinned below. SUMMARY:Philosophy Course Union General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our last general meeting of the year! This is the big one alright; it’s when next year’s executives are voted. Although we have an election process leading up to this date\, there is still the opportunity to vote at the meeting. \nREMEMBER: In order to vote\, you must bring your student ID and proof of enrolment in a philosophy POSt or course this year. This goes for both during the election period and at the meeting. \nThis will take place on Thursday\, March 27th\, at 6pm in JHB 100. There will be refreshments at the meeting\, and afterwards we will be heading to Fox and Fiddle on Bloor for a social. We hope to see you there!

DESCRIPTION:Are you looking to get more involved with the History Students’ Association? Do you have any ideas/suggestions for potential events and lectures for the next academic year? If so\, come out to SS2098 on Thursday\, March 27 at 5PM and run for a position on the HSA executive! \nThe executive positions up for grabs are:\n– President (or Co-Presidents)\n– Vice President (Academic)\n– Vice President (Social)\n– Treasurer\n– Communications Director\n– Journal Director\n– Secretary\n– Webmaster\n– Upper Year Representative \nAll history students are eligible to run. Candidates are asked to prepare a brief two-minute speech outlining their interest in the HSA and any relevant experience. This shall be followed by an election by secret ballot.
